What’s with the tongue?

Updated: Jan 5, 2021

Tongue diagnosis is an integral part of your acupuncturist’s process. I assess the size, shape, color, texture, coating, and more. No two tongues are exactly alike — and your tongue provides information regarding the state of your internal organs, blood, body fluids and energy. I use this information in combination with your reported symptoms, and other diagnostic methods (pulses, palpation, etc.) to determine the nature of your physical imbalances. I can see how your whole body is functioning and detect disruptive dynamics in different body systems. Then I devise a working hypothesis (they call it a medical practice for a reason) and formulate a treatment strategy using acupuncture and herbal medicine.

The tongue is richly supplied by both the nervous system and circulatory system. It is constantly nourished by the production of saliva, which is controlled by the autonomic nervous system and contains water, electrolytes, enzymes and mucus. Since the tongue’s appearance is sensitive to the many physiological shifts in the body it provides valuable information about the internal climate. By observing changes in the tongue from treatment to treatment, your practitioner can adjust her strategy accordingly.
